Type-Safe Register Bitfield Template

Hard C++ Abstraction Asked at Apple
Solve this problem

Design a C++ template that makes an MMIO register field impossible to write out of range, catching the mistake at compile time instead of producing a silent truncation at runtime.

Constraints

  • Template parameters: bit offset and bit width.
  • `write(value)` must static_assert or clamp when the value exceeds the field width.
  • Read-modify-write must preserve neighbouring fields.
  • Zero runtime overhead versus hand-written masking.
  • No virtual functions, no RTTI.
  • Register access must go through a volatile reference.
